The workshop will introduce phenomenology as a qualitative research methodology that is used to explore the nature and meaning of people’s lived experiences – accepting such experiences as complex and multi-faceted phenomena. It will look at the essential philosophical and theoretical elements of phenomenological research methodology, inclusive of the difference between descriptive and interpretative phenomenology. The methodologies will be illustrated with practical examples with opportunities for active participation and a Q&A session.
Anita S van der Merwe, is Professor Emeritus, Department of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University. She is currently a member of the SA National Health Research Ethics Council and conduct research integrity case investigations for SU. Her formal studies in philosophy created a deep interest in phenomenology and the research methodology formed part of her own PhD journey.
Bob Mash is a Distinguished Professor at the Division of Family Medicine and Primary Care at Stellenbosch University. He co-ordinates the PRIMAFAMED network and edited the Wonca book “How to do primary care research”.
