This workshop will introduce two methods that can be used in research or by health services. The first is a 5-step approach to a Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) of a health facility that results in an action plan to improve climate resilience and environmental sustainability. The second is an approach to measuring the carbon footprint of a health facility as supported by Health Care Without Harm. Both methods have recently been used in the Cederberg subdistrict of the Western Cape for primary care facilities, and the results of these studies will be shared to illustrate the methods.
Prof Bob Mash is leading a research team to investigate climate change and primary health care in sub-Saharan Africa. He is working in collaboration with the Climate Action Accelerator and Climate Change, Migration and Health network. The methods presented here have been used in a hospital in Chad and now primary care facilities in South Africa.
Ms Azeeza Rangunwala is a Medical Scientist and currently the Africa Coordinator of the Global Green Healthy Hospitals programme based at Ground Work, an environmental justice organisation and the strategic partner of Health Care Without Harm in the region. She works with health facilities, hospitals and health organisations on decarbonisation and resilience.
