The integration of qualitative and quantitative research is a defining, yet often underdeveloped, feature of mixed methods research. Meaningful integration is needed to generate new insights, called meta-inferences, that comprise the key results. This workshop will focus on designing a mixed methods study to achieve meaningful integration. We will review levels of integration, key considerations, and how to avoid pitfalls.

Timothy C. Guetterman, PhD, is an applied research methodologist specialized in research design and mixed methods research. Tim is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Mixed Methods Program at the University of Michigan. His methodological interest is to advance rigorous methods of mixed methods research, particularly strategies for integration and intersection. He also conducts mixed methods health services research with a focus on improving quality and safety using informatics technology. His research has been funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and foundations. He teaches mixed methods at the SU African Doctoral Academy and recently published an article in the PHCFM series on primary care research methods: https://doi.org/10.4102/phcfm.v17i2.5201
