The workshop will share the experience of establishing the Stellenbosch University Family Physician Research Network (SUFPREN). Practice-based research networks have been used effectively in many regions for family doctors to participate in primary care research. As far as we know SUFPREN is the only such network in sub-Saharan Africa, but there is potential to launch such networks in other countries or expand the existing network within South Africa. This allows clinicians to address research questions that are of relevance to them and to build their capacity to perform primary care research.

Bob Mash is a Distinguished Professor at the Division of Family Medicine and Primary Care at Stellenbosch University. He co-ordinates the PRIMAFAMED network and edited the Wonca book “How to do primary care research”. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the African Primary Health Care and Family Medicine journal. He coordinated the Stellenbosch University Family Physician Research Network in the Western Cape of South Africa.
